Why is Summer the Center of Your Universe?
When my daughter was born, I named her Summer, after my favorite season. I told her at a young age that I gave her that name so that even when it wasn’t summer outside, it would always be Summer inside. I could not have picked a better name—she is warm, intense, and vibrating with freedom, energy, and fun. For years and years she would charge out of bed at 5:00 in the morning, ready to take on the world. At 14, she still gets up earlier than most of the rest of the world, and she still believes she can change it. I do too. I have no idea where she came from because she is a much better person than me or her father. We, her parents, divorced when she was five and her life has been a study in the art of keeping it together in the back-and-forth routine of a shared custody child, but she has handled it, and all the other epic disappointments of life, with grace. I strive to be the person she is, as well as the person she thinks I am.
